Great Gatsby - 1920s Deco Style Comes To The Fore

MAY07

Despite opening to mixed reviews in the US, we're very much looking forward to seeing Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby'. At Milly's Marvels we're very much into all things art deco and what better homage to the Jazz Age than the opulence this film promises?

Already looking at the trailer we can see the costumes and set design are going to be simply stunning. The visual motifs of 1920s style - sleek aerodynamism, angular symmetry and an overall clean and minimal design ethos - are what make the deco look such an enduring and popular movement. It still looks great in today's interiors. From early sneak peeks it looks like the set and costume designers have hit the nail on the head.

Then of course there's the 1920s version of the idealised female - long limbed, short bob cut, a flapper out for a good time, a dancing life and soul of the party, partial to Champers and 'Jazz' cigarettes. A good time girl to put Paris Hilton to shame. We look forward to Carey Mulligan's portrayal of Daisy.
